The 'Idol' spotlight can be hard, especially when scandals, controversies and background histories unravel before viewers' eyes.

Phone Number Flub
American Idol producers got themselves into trouble when they decided to add a 13th contestant to this year’s lineup. The addition posed a problem for Idol's long-standing voting system because 1-866-IDOLS-13 turned out to be the number of a phone sex operation.

Joanna Pacitti
During Season 8, Pacitti advanced into the Top 36. FOX issued a press release shortly after announcing that Pacitti was "ineligible to continue" and was removed from the competition due to her "very personal connections" to Michelle Young and Roger Widynowski, two executives who work for American Idol's 19 Entertainment.

Corey Clark
After he was booted off of Season 2, Clark started making claims about having a sexual relationship with judge Paula Abdul during the entire competition. Paula denied this claim and many people believed that he was trying to cash in on lost fame.

In addition, Clark had a few run-ins with the law back in 2002 when he was arrested for assaulting his sister. He failed to share this information with Idol producers, which ultimately lead to his demise on the show.

Jessica Sierra
Fourth-season Idol finalist Jessica Sierra faced felony battery charges in April 2007 after hitting a man on the head with a glass at a local cafe.

In addition to the battery, she was charged with cocaine possession.

Mario Vazquez
Vazquez was accused of sexually harassing an Idol employee during Season 4. Shortly after, he mysteriously dropped out of the show, citing personal reasons.

Frenchie Davis
Davis was a semi-finalist on the second season of American Idol but was disqualified when topless photos taken earlier in her career surfaced on the Internet.

Antonella Barba
Barba received notoriety beyond her sixth-season appearance when a series of racy photographs surfaced on the Internet prior to the final 12 contestants being chosen.

The incident caused further controversy because she was not dismissed from the show like Season 2's Frenchie Davis.

David Hernandez
The owner of a Phoenix strip club claimed the seventh season finalist worked there for three years as an exotic dancer.

Terrell and Derrell Brittenum
The Memphis twins who made it through to American Idol's fifth-season Hollywood Round were disqualified after identity theft charges surfaced.

Sanjaya Malakar
Season 6 finalist Sanjaya gained millions of fans across the country who call themselves "fanjayas." The main controversy for this Idol contestant was that he was the worst singer on the show. Tons of people joined in on voting for Sanjaya, just to make a mockery of American Idol.
